Making Strides

Miles to date: 201
Money to date: $2,430

So very close to halfway! I set my fundraising goal at $5,000 and at this moment I am only $70 away. This is going towards the best of causes and I could not be happier with the progress that has been made. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, your support is making this all possible.

This past weekend I ran in the Hyannis Half marathon. This is my second time taking part in this race and it remains my favorite half. The conditions were pretty tough as it was a mixture of snow and rain for almost the entirety of the race. That being said, it was a great race. I managed to run a personal best time of 1:55:55. I took over ten minutes off of my time from last year. It's nice to see that all this training is adding up to something.

Now comes the tough part of training. All of the weekend runs are over 12 miles, the long weekday runs are 8 miles or longer and it gets tough to get it all done. The days are getting longer and with any luck the worst of the winter is behind us.

Come Sail Away

Miles to date: 173
Money to date: $2,155

This past weekend Meghan and I took our first vacation since our honeymoon and went on a cruise in the Western Caribbean. It was an incredible vacation and we had a great time.

Despite this awesome vacation, I still had to put in my miles. We left on Wednesday evening, so I was still able to get in my weekday long run but had to sacrifice my Thursday shorter run as we were trying to load on the boat that day.

I was unwilling to sacrifice any of our time in ports to running as I am pretty sure that would have provided Meghan with immediate cause for divorce. Due to this, I had to figure out how to run ten miles on the ship. The good news: the boat had a gym and a running track; however the sun was out and it was in the high 70's so there was zero chance of me running inside. The bad news: the running track was only 1/10th of a mile, so running ten miles meant 100 laps while at sea.

I obviously opted for the track and subjected myself to 100 laps. It was early in the morning, the sun was out, the weather was beautiful and it was some of the most boring running I have ever been involved in. It did not held that we were out at open sea and the pitching of the boat meant that there were unexpected uphills and downhills.

But now we're back and it is time to really lock in for training. Time to lower the boom.

Put yo dancing shoes on

Miles to date: 157
Money to date: $2,155

Big day! Over $2,000. Very exciting, well on my way.

Just a quick update to bring everyone up to speed. Training is going well. Logged in a solid 15 miles this past weekend with the Unlikeliest Team and our new friend Annie. We went from Mass General Hospital, along the water into South Boston with a Castle Island loop, back into the city and finishing along the Esplanade. Steff, Roger and Leslie waved goodbye at Mile 10 and Annie went her own way shortly thereafter. The last few miles were really challenging and icy, but it was good to put a run of that length in.

Now onto other news: I am holding a fundraiser on March 5th at The Vault, located at 105 Water Street, Boston.

Our friends at Triple Eight Vodka and Cape Ann Brewery have been kind enough to donate to the event. Due to their generosity, there will be an open bar at the beginning of the evening, so make sure to get there early. DJ ESQ. has also volunteered his time and will be providing entertainment.

I will be raffling off Red Sox/Yankees tickets for the Saturday August 6th game, a Life is Good gift basket, a Johnnie-O’s gift basket, various gift certificates to local restaurants and other prizes to be announced soon. There will be a suggested donation of $20 at the door, which is accompanied by food, drinks and raffle tickets. Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event. If you have already donated, no additional donation will be required so be sure to join us. Please RSVP if you will be attending so that I can provide them with an accurate headcount.

Keep on keeping on.

Cold as Ice

Miles to date: 139
Money to date: $1,955.00

Apparently someone is paying attention to, or at least reading my blog, because it finally stopped crapping snow for a few days.

That's the positive, the negative is that training has been sparse this week and when it has happened its been cold, really really cold.

Last weeks long run was great. Maika put on a great run through the back bay and the end of the race course. Huge turnout from the MGH team. Ran with some great people.

I missed my first workout of training this week. No real good excuse, did not do it on Monday because of the Superbowl and Tuesday I was trying to be a good husband on Meghan's birthday. Whatever, it's all excuses.

The weekday runs are starting to get pretty lengthy. Wednesday's run was 7 miles. Unbeknownst to me, it was 8 degrees when I left. I have never been so cold as I was when I finished that run. Not fun. Lesson for the day: check the temp and realize that the treadmills are there for a reason.

It's twice as nice on ice*

Money to date: $1,900
Miles to date: 114

Song of the moment: Colder Weather -Zac Brown Band ft. Little Big Town (a possible recurring theme)

Cut the crap. Really.

Training continues to go well, if not a bit difficult. We have been belted with another round of snow and yesterday we were lucky enough to get freezing rain and sleet, which turned everything to a massive sheet of ice.

Needless to say I moved everything indoors today. Had a great cross-training session at the gym.

This weekend we will start to get into some higher mileage. Friend of the blog Maika will be leading the MGH team run on Saturday (possibly Sunday, weather depending). It looks like we will be running 13 miles by tackling the last 6.5 miles of the marathon course backwards out and back. Unlikeliest Team Captain Meghan will be serving as water girl at the turn around point.

The last two weeks I have done my Saturday runs with the Mass General Marathon Team. It has been a wonderful opportunity to meet other people who are devoting themselves to raising money to support pediatric cancer care and research. The dedication shown by some of the people involved is astounding.

As much as I have always wanted to run the Boston Marathon, it is such an incredible honor to be able to do it for such a meaningful cause. I have friends who have fallen victim to cancer at too young of an age, I have family who have as well. To be able to lend my support to such a great cause makes what I am going through so much more worthwhile.

Some mornings (most mornings) the last thing I want to do is get out of bed. Especially given the weather we have been dealing with. But to think about how trivial my suffering is compared to those who are battling cancer helps to put things in perspective.

I want to do this in memory of those who I have lost, I want to do this for those who will be lost. For my friends, for my family, for your friends and family. I want to do this because it is what I would want someone to do for me.

I plan on writing the names of those I am honoring on my team uniform prior to the race. If there is anyone you want remembered or honored please let me know, it would be my pleasure to run for them as well.
